Welcome to Once A Metro

The dawn of a new decade marks a new era for the New York Red Bulls, with the franchise opening their brand new stadium under a new regime.  Last season was a forgettable one at best, with the team lifeless from the opening kick in Seattle.  Let's just say thank goodness for the absence of relegation in Major League Soccer. However, 2010 is a new chapter in the history of the franchise, and one that hopefully can help the team quickly put 2009 behind them.

The move to the new stadium will only help (the effect of Juan Pablo Angel playing on grass instead of the awful Giants Stadium concrete turf is very underrated). But it remains to be seen how the new regime of Sporting Director Erik Soler and Head Coach Hans Backe will acclimate themselves in MLS.  It's well known that the track record of foreign coaches in the league is pretty terrible, and Red Bulls and MetroStars fans have had plenty of their own first-hand experiences.  The way-too-early returns have been good, with the Bulls posting a so-far undefeated record in preseason.  Backe has shown some good signs in terms of staying consistent in the team's formation (a welcome change from the seemingly random choices by previous coach Juan Carlos Osorio).  Of course, we will see for certain starting March 27th.

So with that, we welcome you to this brand new site.  We will be constantly updated with the latest Red Bulls news, as well as previews and breakdowns of every match, and plenty of opinions.  We invite you to join the conversation in the comments sections and we of course encourage FanShots and FanPosts, located on the right side of the page. It's a new era for the Red Bulls, so let's get going. Welcome!

Welcome to the site

Well, this was certainly a pleasant surprise. I was never a Metro (never will be, not sure I missed much other than Savarese, Mathis, the birth of Tim Howard, and Petke’s CRIME OF THE CENTURY/REVENGE IS COMING t-shirt), but I am a Red Bull.

What type of formation is Backe running anyway?

Backe

Backe has said that he almost always likes to play with 4 in the back, and based on the preseason lineups it seems that the team has been playing a fairly straightforward 4-4-2. Definitely a good thing to see, as Osorio was known to use a 3-5-2 one game, and then a 4-5-1 the next. Hopefully we’ll see some more consistency here.

On behalf of Blueshirt Banter, I welcome you not only to SBNation, but to the NY/NJ family of SBN sites.

Good luck, I know a few diehard Bulls fans that I am sure will be checking you out.

Welcome

Nice to have some company here on the right coast. Best of luck to you.

In the mean time, we’re going to have to get back to rearranging our trophy case to make room for yet another Atlantic Cup.

Atlantic cup

Maybe we just need to build a dedicated Atlantic Cup trophy case… 10 a decade can really add up…maybe VW will spring for it…
Will Philly join in on the Atlantic Cup fun?

Welcome To The Site

Just stopping by for the first of many posts to welcome you to SB Nation from everyone at Gang Green Nation, and to the NY/NJ family of blogs. I’m a recent convert to MLS, being British, football ‘soccer’ was a big part of my up bringing. Been following my childhood team for a while (Norwich City), and have recently taken an interest in the Red Bulls so expect to be across here quite a lot over the coming months.

P.S Carl Robinson was one of my favourite players while he was at Norwich, so that helped my decision on the Red Bulls.
