Red Bulls at Colorado Rapids Post Game review
The Red Bulls were away today at the Dick's Sporting Goods Park for a game against the Colorado Rapids. The Red Bulls came out in a very odd formation, at least compared to past games. Backe played a 1-1-4-4 with Angel as the sole forward backed by Joel Lindpere. Mendes has completely replaced Mike Petke in the backfield and the team seems faster and able to cover more field than Mike. They are missing Mike's heart though, he's the soul of the team. Bouna Coundoul returned to Colorado to a tough supporters crowd. They were yelling out "Rapids Reject" while the vuvuzela's were buzzing.
The Rapids were attacking quickly with the Albright forced to foul in the second minute. Cummings was able to find the back of the net in the 15th minute giving the Rapids the lead in very early on. At the 25th, the Rapids had a goal called off after Danliegh Borman was fouled. Thanks to our friend UZ from SBnation's Denver website, it appears that the goal was called back on a delayed offsides. Sorry for the confusion. At the 34th New York finally found the score board on a Ubiparipovic corner that Angel was able to hit the top of the net. This goal also put Juan Pablo Angel as tied for the league leading 9 goals on the season with Edson Buddle of the LA Galaxy. After starting the season slow, JPA has definitely found some bounce to his game and has been scoring goals without set shooting on penalties.
The end of the first half ended with the Red Bulls threatening on the attack. As the second half started, the sky opened up and rain began to pour down. The game continued just as it ended with the Reds Bulls attacking, first with Angel putting one over the crossbar in the 48th and then Dane Richards threatening in the 50th that saw Pickens forced to punch the ball away. In the 54th, Seth Stammler sent a shot wide. In the final third of the game, Colorado finally game back alive forcing Coundoul to dive all over the place, then there was the Ballouchy shot off the woodwark after beating Bouna in the 67th. The game ended at 1-1 and the Red Bulls extend their winning streak to four and pick up some needed points on the road with Colorado now sitting at 27. Would have been nice to have a W but at least we picked up those points. Also when you consider that the second half was under less than optimal weather conditions, it has to feel picking up some points on the road against a tough Colorado team.
Hope you all had a safe and fun 4th of July.

I was not one of the people that were jeering at Bouna, I always liked the guy. :(

He’s a bit inconsistent but when he’s on no one can beat him. He does have some leg issues (distance on kicks) but luckly the Red Bulls have a pretty solid midfield that can make up for it.

It’s the first draw of the year and in some ways the Red Bulls were lucky to get it. A Ballouchy goal was wiped out by a foul by Casey well before the play, a late whistle. That was a huge break as that could have thrown the game entirely in Colorado’s way as opposed to just most of it. The Rapids were giving Toledo an earful all night long, so I’m sure they feel the game wasn’t to their liking – not sure why since they owned the beginning and end of it, but whatever. I’m not going to complain since the last two times the Red Bulls went up to Colorado, they lost 4-0 each time.
One more thing: As great as Angel’s goal was, how in the world did no one on Colorado mark him? He collected the ball, perfect first touch, and slams it home with no one in burgundy pressuring him. Great job by Angel but I’m amazed at some of the defending decisions at time – if there’s one man to mark on NY, it’s him, right?

Your second point is something that I legitimately didn’t understand at all. He’s our biggest scoring threat and was able to get a perfect look at the goal. I know a gift when we receive one and that’s what that was, a gift. I do think that he’s definitely started to come into this own though since a very slow start and you can tell that he’s improved since playing on the astroturf at Giants Stadium last year. That stuff can kill your knees and he’s improved since the RBA opening.

According to the telecast I was under the impression that the head ref was actually calling a delayed offside on the play, not a foul. That also seemed to be the consensus of the people at the stadium.
I was sitting at The Dick on the side that they scored and to me it just looked like everyone on the field froze when Angel got the ball, Pickens was flat footed and just held his ground rather than charging, while everyone else seemed to look like they thought he was going to. Basically every single player thought someone else would do something but nobody actually did it.

It was one of the oddest things in the world. I’ve never seen everyone just stand still waiting for a goal. But something about gift horses and a mouth right?

Indeed.
I wasn’t going to fault the Rapids for that though, they had so many great chances in the second half that they couldn’t seem to finish off that the gift goal shouldn’t have mattered. :/
At least the fireworks were good, hypothermia and all!

The weather conditions looked awful and definitely decided that game. Both teams had some great looks with the Red Bulls controlling from the 30th to the 60th minute. I think both are happy with coming away with a tie.
