USA vs. Mexico: Gold Cup (Copa Oro) Final Live Match Thread

One Juan! We've only got one Juan!

It's the United States vs. Mexico and Juan Agudelo vs. Rafael Márquez for a place in the 2013 Confederations Cup. For those of you who are die-hard Red Bulls fans who haven't been keeping track of the Gold Cup, the USA scraped through Group C after losing their first group stage game ever to Panama, while Mexico demolished the rest of Group A, scoring 14 goals and only conceding one in three matches.

In the knockout stage, the USA knocked off Jamaica and Panama 2-0 and 1-0, respectively, but played pretty well in both matches. Mexico came from behind to beat Guatemala 2-1, and then required extra time on Wednesday to get past Honduras, 2-0. This final is the third consecutive Gold Cup Final between Mexico and the USA, with the two sides splitting the last two. Mexico have the overall advantage in Gold Cups and final wins over the United States, with eight tournament wins and a 3-1 record against the Americans in the showpiece game of the tournament.

If you're looking for more detailed analysis of the final, check out this story stream on the main SB Nation Soccer page.

I hate the Mexican team

with a passion. From Rafa’s elbow to Cobi Jones’ head, to Dirty Sanchez trying to trip Jozy after he scored, this is one of the nastiest, dirty teams in a nasty, dirty region.

I hate CONCACAF

with the exception of chiefly us, Canada, and Jamaica, there are so many teams thats just play a thuggish brand of soccer. Mexico has skill and can play with flair, but when you take a thuggish team like Guatemala or Honduras and combine it with a slooooowwwww style of play, those games are absolutely brutal to watch. You just hope for a goal and that nobody gets hurt or showered with urine.

Mike Magee is in goal for the Galaxy for the second half

Ricketts came off around 23’ in, then Saunders was sent off just before halftime. Magee is 5’ 9" and is wearing Saunders’ (6’ 4") jersey. Hilarity will ensue — the game is on FSC by the way.

That Saunders card was a joke

Lenhart bought that call by headbutting the ball out of his hands and then selling an elbow. It will be interesting to see if MLS comes down on him harder than Davies, given the language they used for Davies’ punishment.

I actually like this lineup

I think with Bedoya, Adu, Dempsey and Donovan up top this is our best opportunity for pace and creativity.

If we lose this game

it is on Jonathan Fucking Bornstein. This guy continues to make rosters and continues to hurt us. Absolutely torched on a terrible ball-watching mistake, and then just beat like a rented mule on the second goal. He can’t mark to save his goddamn life. I have literally never hated a player for my national team as much as I hate this guy. The fact that he’s on the field fills me with fury right now. He’s either Bradley’s illegitimate secret love child or he has some compromising photos of Sunil Gulati. I just cannot fathom why he’s here hurting our chances right now.

Their brilliant shots

nestle in inches over our defenders’ heads. Our brilliants shots hit crossbars and go inches wide. This game changed with Cherundolo going out. Bornstein deserves at least 75% of the blame, since three of the four goals were either directly against him or started on his side without him dealing with them. When does Timmy Chandler come in to give us some real depth on the outside?

i cannot understand the bornstein decision

throw away the fact that he is an absolutely useless player who has no right to be playing on an international team of any merit whatsoever, and consider merely that by bringing in bornstein, lichaj had to move to his non-natural right side. jonathan spector, a natural right back, sat on the bench and watched the whole freakin’ game! if for no other reason, spector should be coming in just because then lichaj can play his natural side! now of course, add in the consideration that bornstein is easily the worst player to wear a US uniform in recent memory, and the decision should be an easy one. your right back is injured. bring in the best wide defender you have who also happens to be most comfortable on the right side. but no, that’s what a sane manager would do, and we are stuck with bob bradley. he must go.
