Central Midfielder "Coming Next Week"
According to Erik Soler, the Red Bulls are expecting to sign a central midfielder next week. He told the New York Post...
"One or two, I hope that we can announce it at the end of next week,’’ said Backe. "We’re looking for a versatile midfield player, because as I said what I’ve learned in this league is that you can’t have experts. (You need) a guy in midfield that can play wide or central. My hope is that we can announce it at the end of next week.’’
This mystery player isn't expected to be a "classic No. 10" but "more of a holding midfielder with some attacking qualities."
It's been a long time coming, though, Soler didn't make clear if it would be one of the "young Americans with international experience" he was promising in late December.

Clever Backe?
Reading this quote and Brian Lewis’ article, I get the sense that Hans Backe is starting to get MLS a bit. I have a bit more faith that, despite the horrible errors of last year, the experience taught him a lot. He knows you can’t rely on 11 players and that’s it. He’s looking for depth at all the positions to deal with all the ups and downs of the season. Fingers crossed
I think they're both...
…getting it. Backe and Soler. I think they realized MLS isn’t quite like the rest of the world, where there’s a direct correlation between money spent and winning games. It’s not really like that in MLS (or any other American sport really). Which is good. Since everyone thinks this team is a wreck, maybe Backe can surprise people a la 2010.
