Matt Miazga has attracted some attention after putting in some fantastic performances for the Red Bulls and the U-20 U.S. National Team. Recently rumors circulated a scout from Swansea, among other teams, attended the RBNY-NYCFC match, to scout the young talent. Needless to say, the rumor mill has finally caught up to the scouts.
Swansea midfielder Leon Britton has been linked to the New York Red Bulls, for some time, but a new article, from the Liberty Legion, suggests that the interest is not to sign the midfielder outright.
In a summer that has seen some of the finest central midfielders in the world leave for the MLS, another great could be joining the floury of footballing legends in America for next season.
Leon Britton is now being linked with a move to New York Red Bulls after reports from across the pond claim that the Red Bulls want the Swansea legend in a deal that could see defender Matt Miazga go the other way.
Britton had a disappointing season in 2014/15, racking up just seven appearances – a vast difference from previous campaigns where he started week in, week out.
With Britton rumored to be the sixth or seventh option in Swansea's midfield behind Jack Cork, Jonjo Shelvey, Ki Sung-Yueng, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Matt Grimes and Jay Fulton, it makes sense for him to want to make a change.
With the transfer window opening July 8th, and very little discussion on the New York Red Bull front, the deal does not necessarily seem likely. However, Miazga's exit does seem a little more truthful as the player looks to have a bright future as very few players can say before the age of 20, managed to hold off the best striker in Spanish history for a full 90 minutes.
Britton, on the other hand seems to be resigned to his fate to the bench in Swansea, unless a swap occurs:
"I have two years left on my contract, but I am 32 and I don’t want to be not playing at this age, so I have said to the manager that I will look at my options," Britton told the South Wales Evening Post last month.
"You never know what can happen, someone could get injured and there could be a chance for me to get back into the team.
"But I have to look at things the way they are now, and as it stands the manager feels it will be difficult for me to play."
The Red Bulls currently employ a central midfield of Dax McCarty, Felipe Martins, and Sacha Kljestan, with youngsters Sean Davis, Leo Stolz waiting in the wings. It is unclear if Britton would supplant any of those in the depth cart, making his transfer "unlikely," like the initial reports were in June, especially on a team strapped for defenders with the CONCACAF Gold Cup rapidly approaching.
