"I know it might be boring to you guys, I know some guys maybe might not like it, but the key for us to win MLS Cup is Rafa Marquez."Thierry Henry Henry's long been a proponent of his embattled teammate, but he hasn't been quite as militant about it as he's been lately.
We have high expectations of ourselves as individuals and as a team. That’s what makes us a good team. We finished the game with three points, which is the most important thing, but as individuals and as a group we didn’t live up to the standards that we set.Heath Pearce on the Red Bulls 3-2 comeback victory Sunday night against the Portland Timbers. Much has been made about Henry's post-game sulking, but the rest of the team knows the first half hour was unacceptable.
Kandji controlled the ball on his chest, step on it, look, see if someone was in the stands, take a coffee, turn, call his family, no one was answering, left a message, and then though oh, I might cross the ball. He crossed it and they scored. You can’t win a game of football when you play like that. I’m not attacking anyone, but that was the fact.Quote of the year from Thierry Henry on the team's poor marking of Macouba Kandji last week.
It was a tough game. It was a tough start for us. They are tough to play here but we cannot give them an early mistake to score a goal. But we play them next week, so hopefully we can come back and get first place next week at home.Sebastien Le Toux on Saturday's loss to Houston.
We didn’t show up the first five minutes of the second half. You concede two goals on the road and you lose the game. Overall, it’s three terrible mistakes. You can’t concede goals like this. You lose games and it’s very disappointing.Hans Backe on Saturday's 3-1 loss in Montreal
"I needed to do something. I was pretty useless because of injuries, obviously not delivering. So I’m happy to do something today.’’Thierry Henry on his game winning goal this afternoon.
'Caps trade Le toux to Red Bulls for Dane Richards."I swear I just saw this on the MLS soccer website. I came here, and then when I cllcked back again it was gone. There was a picture and everything, in the 'around the league section...
Their playing style is totally different compared to when they had Aaron Winter as a coach when they were trying to play from the back four and to come out from the back four. Now they are in a typical, very, very direct football first pass out to strikers. (Danny) Koevermans and (Ryan) Johnson are very good as targets then they play from a lot of crosses and a lot of set plays. I think in the second half we looked more composed in possession, we turned the game and they have to slide a lot to get to passes that were very close to scoring winners. But overall, I would say, on the road and with the team that has definitely bounced back I can live with one point.Hans Backe on Toronto FC's new style under Paul Mariner.
I made sure to walk around the locker room leading up to this game to the young guys and the new guys saying, ‘Listen, you know, if you don’t know anything about this rivalry, get on your computer, research it, or ask me. I don’t want you showing up that day and thinking it’s just like any old game.' And they got the picture.Mike Petke on inducting new players into the New York-D.C. rivalry.
"The first 45 is definitely the best we’ve been playing, probably since I arrived I would say," Backe told reporters during his postgame press conference. "As I said at halftime, the passing game is phenomenal, very few unforced errors and the movement's top-class."Hans Backe on the first half of the team's Sunday night win over D.C. United.
