It was pretty much a foregone conclusion the Red Bulls would go with a midfielder with their lone draft pick in this afternoon's MLS SuperDraft.

The only question was, with the midfield so thin, would they go with a winger or cover for Dax McCarty?

They went with the latter in Ian Christianson, a defensive midfielder from Georgetown who turns 22 the day the Red Bulls kick off their season against the Portland Timbers.

If the above video is any evidence, he can win the ball in the air, tackle and pass well.

If Mike Petke's comments are any indicator, Christianson is a developmental move for the team. And Christianson himself is "pumped" so I guess that's a good thing.

Anyway, for those itching to learn more, here's his profile from Georgetown's website, from Top Drawer Soccer and from MLSsoccer.com.
