Who Have the Red Bulls Let Go?

Hey guys, there's a re-entry draft tomorrow.

You didn't know? That's ok, neither did I, but thanks to the guys over at Black and Red United, I've learned.

Hot Time in Old Town has a nice breakdown of what the draft is and why it's important, but if you don't want to read all that, just know the re-entry draft is how players who are out-of-contract get back on teams, in lieu of actual free agency.

The player pool is made up of players who have been cut or otherwise released. Some teams, like the Columbus Crew and the New England Revolution, have already made, and publicized, their cuts. We know the Red Bulls have made cuts, too. We just don't know who.

There's no reason to expect a major blow-up of the team, like last year and the firing squad that parsed the roster down considerably, and there's no reason to believe the Red Bulls will be active in tomorrow's draft, if only because not many teams are. But the who will be interesting.

Looking at salaries, Andre Akpan is the only real stand-out, as he's getting paid $67,595 and is the fifth choice striker. Heath Pearce might be a good candidate, too, as he's getting paid $331,236, with, reportedly, some of that comped by Chivas USA, although that doesn't seem to be the case.

The Red Bulls could go even broader, handing guys like Peguy Luyindula walking papers, despite his reinvention as a playmaking midfielder, or Ibrahim Sekagya, who isn't better than Markus Holgersson and sits ahead of highly-touted Matt Miazga on the depth chart. Those moves seem unlikely, though.

I suppose we'll find out soon enough.
