Week 19: Reviewing Toronto FC-Red Bulls

The Red Bulls go up to Toronto and draw against the floundering Canadian side.

July 20, 2013: Toronto FC 0, Red Bulls 0

This is the kind of draw that feels like a loss.

The win was sitting right there for the Red Bulls: Toronto is foundering, and that's being kind. To make matters worse for the Reds, they were missing their top two scorers.

For the Red Bulls, they just came off an impressive performance against the Montreal Impact and a draw against French power Olympique Lyonnais during the week.

It was a game that was sitting right there for the Red bulls. They still leave with a point, but it doesn't feel good.

Positives

  • Luis Robles made some nice saves.
  • Marius Obekop and Michael Bustamante clearly have impressed Mike Petke, as they both got some minutes yesterday.

Negatives

  • Consistency is becoming an issue. Aside from the April to mid-May stretch where they went 5-0-2, they've run hot and cold.
  • That comes down to Petke. He can trash the team's performances all he likes, but it comes down to him and his staff to prepare the team properly. Some of the consistency issues fall at his feet.

Notable Quotes

Petke, via the New York Post...

Not impressive, not impressive at all. Toronto had the right mentality, we didn't. We play this game on paper we win this game, but this game is not played on paper, this game is played with heart, effort, logic and Toronto had all of those categories today so in a way I feel fortunate we got a point.
