Back in February, when the Cosmos watchers were keen on asking coach (and MetroStars legend) Giovanni Savarese about a potential Open Cup match-up with the Red Bulls, he didn't want to talk about it.
Well, now, three-ish months later, it looks like he might have to.
Should the Cosmos get past the NPSL's Brooklyn Italians two weeks from now at St. John's Belson Stadium, they'll get the Red Bulls, at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, Long Island.
Everyone kind of knew this was coming, since U.S. Soccer tries to keep early round Open Cup opponents close by to cut down on travel costs, but it's nice to see it's official.
As for the date, it's all TBD so far, but this week Red Bulls' Head Coach Mike Petke mentioned the possible dates are June 11th, 14th and 18th.
But before we get ourselves all worked up, the Cosmos will have to get past the Italians first. They're pretty pumped for the game, recently taking shots at both the Red Bulls and NYCFC.
Of course, if that doesn't happen it will be 1) Hilarious and 2) Set up an Italians-Red Bulls match up at Red Bull Arena.
