RBNY Power Rankings - Week 8 Results

How does the Power Rankings work out after scraping by with a 1-0 win in Dallas?

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Each week, myself, Matt Coyne, Tim Dean, Austin Fido, and you the fans will be able to rank the New York Red Bulls squad from best to worst. As you can see by the table below, the math for this is pretty simple. The four Once a Metro writers get a vote, and we add a fifth collective fan vote. We take a straight average of the votes, and rank the players accordingly. The Once a Metro staff also adds comments about each player, and I'll give some thoughts on how things shook out later in the article.

For the table, here's the initials you need to know:

  • JI - Jason Iapicco
  • TD - Tim dean
  • MC - Matt Coyne
  • AF - Austin Fido

Fan Vote from Week 9 can be found here.

Rankings

Rank Player Change Jason Tim Matt Austin Fans Average Comments
1 Luis Robles 0 1 1 1 1 1 1 TD - Robles' quitly fantastic season has gotten a lot louder in recent weeks. Easily the team's MVP. Let's see how he handles the spotlight.
2 Bradley Wright-Phillips 1 3 3 3 2 7 3.6 AF - He's the man who scores our goals right now.
3 Thierry Henry 1 2 4 2 4 8 4 JI - Henry could've very easily scored against Dallas but thought it would be better to keep BWP going.
4 Lloyd Sam -2 4 2 4 3 9 4.4 AF - He is sustaining his level of play and is at least part of the reason BWP has found time and space to shine.
5 Jamison Olave 0 5 7 5 5 2 4.8 TD - Olave once again belongs in the conversation for the league's best centerback.
6 Roy Miller 0 6 5 6 7 5 5.8 TD - It takes a hell of a lot of work to erase the kind of season Roy had last year...but the Costa Rican seems to be pulling it off.
7 Eric Alexander 0 8 8 11 8 3 7.6 JI - Seriously, Alexander on the left? It's working out really well.
8 Armando 2 9 10 8 10 6 8.6 MC - The well-coiffed Spaniard is back from injury and, for once, had a quiet game against FC Dallas. Here's hoping he can build on that.
9 Dax McCarty 2 7 9 9 9 10 8.8 MC - There's room for improvement with Dax, but he's stil lsolid in the middle of the field.
10 Kosuke Kimura -1 10 11 10 11 4 9.2 JI - Had a decent game on the right, but showed some issues.
11 Peguy Luyindula -3 10 6 7 6 18 9.4 JI - He suffered from sitting so Cahill could start. At this point, he should always be in the starting XI.
12 Jonny Steele 0 12 12 14 13 11 12.4 MC - Steele is effective when he plays, but getting those minutes is the issue.
13 Ibrahim Sekagya -1 14 14 12 12 12 12.8 AF - Seems like Petke prefers Armando for the moment.
14 Tim Cahill -2 13 13 13 14 15 13.6 AF - There's nothing wrong with him that a run of games won't fix. But he won't get that for RBNY until after the World Cup.
15 Ruben Bover 0 15 16 16 15 13 15 MC - Bover can be an effective player in this league. He just needs the minutes.
16 Bobby Convey 1 19 15 15 18 17 16.8 JI - Will probably be called upon when Miller leaves for the World Cup, but should he?
16 Matt Miazga 0 18 17 18 17 14 16.8 MC - Miazga's got the potential to be a very good player. Key word there is potential.
18 Connor Lade -1 17 18 17 16 20 17.6 TD - There's a comaprison between Lade and Schrodinger's cat to be found somewhere. I just don't have the strength.
19 Andre Akpan 0 16 20 20 19 19 18.8 TD - I'm sure Akpan will shoot up the rankings as soon as he gets some minutes...until then, welcome to the bottom.
19 Richard Eckersley 1 20 19 19 20 16 18.8 AF - In the doghouse until such time as he gets the chance to prove us all wrong.

Thoughts

  • Biggest Jump: Dax McCarty & Armando (+2)
  • Biggest Drop: Peguy Luyindula (-3)
  • Robles is the first player to be a unanimous #1.
  • Kimura was much higher rated by the fans (4) than by the OaM Staff (Avg 10.5).
  • Luyindula was rated much lower by the fans (18) than by the OaM Staff (Avg 7.25).
  • It looks like the rankings have settled for the most part, probably because of the (pretty much) the same lineup being used from game to game.
  • Places 15-20 are tied up by those players who don't get a lot of playing time (Bover, Convey, Miazga, Lade, Akpan, Eckersley).

What do you think of how the staff voted? Think we were too harsh/lenient? Think the rankings are good or bad? Let us know in the comments.
