Red Bulls part ways with Jonny Steele

The Northern Irish midfield is off for greener pastures. Are the Red Bulls?

The New York Red Bulls announced today that they have parted ways with midfielder Jonny Steele. Steele, while a lineup mainstay in 2013, has seem to fallen out of grace with Mike Petke. He's appeared in 15 of the clubs 17 games, but has only started in 6.

"Jonny had an offer from outside of Major League Soccer and we have agreed to his request to depart the club. We appreciate Jonny’s contributions over the past two seasons and wish him the best of luck in the future," said Red Bulls Sporting Director Andy Roxburgh. "With the open roster spot and available salary cap space from his departure, we are looking to add to the squad in the coming weeks."

Thankfully there is no need for speculation on this move. While Steele probably wanted out, the move clears up cap space ($134,996.00) for the Red Bulls, as well as an international spot, allowing them to go out and sign someone, maybe even a 3rd Designated Player.

What are your thoughts on Steele leaving the team?
