Rumor: RBNY after defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste

The Red Bulls are looking at the former academy product to bolster the back line.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Andrew Jean-Baptiste used to play in the New York Red Bulls academy (depending on who you ask), even playing with the U-23 squad in 2010. He got away from the team however when the Portland Timbers selected him 8th overall in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft. It looks like he'll be returning as Brian Lewis is reporting that a source close to player has said that the team & player are on the verge of having a contract signed.

Jean-Baptiste would add some much needed depth on the back line, especially the center back position. There are currently only 6 defenders listed on the team's website, and even lighter at center back as only Matt Miazga and Armando play the position naturally.

Jean-Baptiste broke into the Portland Timbers starting lineup in 2013 and appeared in a total of 31 games in 2 years. He was traded to now-defunct Chivas USA in 2014 and played on 10 games after being plagued with injuries and better options ahead of him.
