Derrick Etienne's first start in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship coincided with Haiti's last hope of a retaining a mathematical chance of qualifying for the next round.
A 2-3 loss to Honduras has now eliminated that hope, but it may pave the way for Etienne to get another run in the starting lineup for Les Grenadiers' last game of the tournament, against Mexico on January 22.
Honduras had a two-goal lead by the 38th minute, but Haiti battled back to square the game thanks to a brace from Jonel Desire. Both teams won penalties in this match, each was saved, and each resulted in a goal knocked in off the rebound. Sadly for Haiti, Honduras's Bryan Rochez's contribution to the unusual coincidence was the game's last goal and Los Catrachos' winner. (Rochez will be playing for Orlando City SC in 2015.)
New York Red Bulls' academy prospect Etienne played the full match, and we hope for one more chance to see him in action in Jamaica on January 28.
