The United States U-20 team started off the U-20 Championship poorly, picking up 1 point from their first two matches with a +/- 0 Goal Differential. The last two matches have been something else. They put up 8 on a weakened Aruba side, including 6 in the first half with ex-Red Bull Amando Moreno scoring late in the match. That performance was followed 2-0 win over Jamaica, which also eliminated the host nation.
The US now faces what is almost a must-win match. The top two in Group A (Panama & Guatemala) have already qualified for either the next round or for an automatic qualification bid for the 2015 U-20 World Cup. The US has no chance of automatically qualifying as they are 5 points off of Panama with only 1 match to pay. That match for the US, is against the only other team that hasn't been eliminated or already though to the next round, Trinadad & Tobago.
T&T currently sit in 4th place in Group A, exactly 3 points away from the US. The top of the group qualifies for the World Cup in New Zeland, while 2nd and 3rd go into a playoff for the last two spots that CONCACAF has. For the US to advance to the playoffs of the CONCACAF Championships, they need a draw or win over T&T. They need at least a draw because the first tiebreak (US & T&T would be tied if US lost) is based off of head to head results. That would leave the US on the outside looking in.
From a New York Red Bulls perspective, Matt Miazga will look to continue on his last game. He played a full 90 minutes aginst Jamaica and helped the US to its second straight shutout, boosting the team's goal difference to +9.
