Bulls Abroad: Derrick Etienne and Haiti sign off with 1-1 draw against Mexico in CONCACAF U-20 Championship

One less Red Bull abroad after Haiti's last match in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship...

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Red Bulls' academy prospect Derrick Etienne came off the bench for a couple of minutes in stoppage time to help Haiti close out a 1-1 draw with Mexico in its final game of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

The tournament will continue on January 24, but Haiti's competition is over: three points from five games, last place in Group B.

Still, Les Grenadiers will be able to say they didn't lose to Mexico - an achievement that proved beyond any other team in the group, and may yet prove too much for Panama as well (Los Canaleros will meet El Tri in the Championship final).

And Etienne had the privilege of relieving Nerlin Saint-Vil, Haiti's goalscorer on the night. It was a helluva goal.

The young Red Bull will presumably have benefited from his time in Jamaica. Whether the experience and exposure will help recommend him to a homegrown contract at the appropriate time in his future remains to be seen.
