Rumor: Damien Perrinelle might be back with the New York Red Bulls for 2015

Can a soccer player visit New York City without becoming the subject of a transfer rumor? Nope.

Eric Bolte-USA TODAY Sports

Looks like an old friend of the New York Red Bulls is back in the big city...

Damien Perrinelle was a mid-season signing for RBNY in 2014, starting all four of the team's CONCACAF Champions Leagye games and contributing seven minutes to the MLS regular season campaign from two off-the-bench appearances. He did very little wrong over those 341 minutes, but also very little to suggest he was a better option in defense than the established starters. Unsurprisingly, he was released at the end of the year.

But it was also said that Perrinelle was one of a handful of released players the club was talking to about returning for 2015.

Is he back? Well, he's still calling himself a Red Bull on his Twitter bio, for whatever that is worth.

And he is being followed by the "RBNY II" Twitter account that looks an awful lot like it will be the 140-character spokes-bot for the Red Bulls' USL PRO team. (Significant because the account is just setting itself up and has only got as far as following USL PRO teams  and RBNY players, for the most part.)

The club desperately needs defenders, for both its squads. Perrinelle was used primarily as a center back by Mike Petke, but he allegedly can fill in as a right back also. And it just so happens the Red Bulls are kicking off their preseason on Monday.

Perrinelle could simply be sight-seeing, catching up with the friends he made last year, or just tweeting randomly about New York City landmarks because of his profound appreciation of internationally-renowned architecture.

We'll see if he reports for training on Monday. Though some are already reporting a deal is done:

In other news from the Twitter-sphere, we note alleged RBNY transfer-target Andrew Jean-Baptiste is still kicking around New York.

He is, of course, from New York, so his presence here is not remotely as conspicuous as Perrinelle's - but Jean-Baptiste is another name and face to look out for when the pre-season training lists and photos start to appear.
