At 1pm Friday, it was announced that New York Red Bulls defenseman Matt Miazga was called up to the senior United States national team. Later in the day, Karl Ouimette was confirmed for Canada and Kemar Lawrence for Jamaica, making the total tally three RBNY defensemen to get nods from their national teams to participate in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying.
Ouimette has 12 caps at the ripe age of 23. After seeing the field for the Red Bulls 11 times in 2015, he was later moved to RBNY II in USL where he made five appearances. Canada will host Honduras in Vancouver on November 11th and visit El Salvador on November 17th.
Lawrence is also 23, but already has 27 caps for Jamaica, including two goals. Lawrence has been an important cog for the Reggae Boyz, helping them to defeat the USMNT on their way to a second place finish in this past summer's Gold Cup. He also helped his team win the 2014 Caribbean Cup, giving them a berth into next summer's Copa America Centario to be played in the US. Jamaica will host Panama at their national stadium in Kingston on November 13th before traveling to Haiti on November 17th.
With Damien Perrinelle injured for the next six months and Ronald Zubar & Miazga sitting on yellow cards after the first playoff leg versus D.C. United, Ouimette and Lawrence need to be careful not to pick up any injuries themselves before the Red Bulls move onto the Eastern Conference finals. Congratulations to Matt, Karl and Kemar on their call-ups.
