A lot of leagues do rookie of the league. A lot of leagues though, don't have the dynamic of players being a rookie in the league but having previous professional experience. That's why we have Newcomer of the Year.
Sacha Kljestan, Felipe Martins, Kemar Lawrence, and Mike Grella all fit that mold, and all four made big contributions to the 2015 New York Red Bulls season.
Congratulations Mike Grella, you are, as picked by the fans, the 2015 Newcomer of the Year. You joined the New York Red Bulls after bouncing around a few teams, not able to secure a spot in a Starting XI. You even started the season as a tandem on the left side of midfield with Sal Zizzo.
When he went down with an injury early in the year though, you took your shot. You scored the 1000th goal in team history with a sick chip of Steve Clark. You were given the nickname "Grelladinho" by Shep Messing. There's calls for you to be called into the national team. You probably would've won the same award for the league if not for Sebastian Giovinco and Didier Drogba. You made the position your own, and for your efforts, you are our Newcomer of the Year.
