New York Red Bulls II midfielder Dan Metzger has been summoned to Carson, California by US Under-23 Men's National Team coach Andi Herzog. The RBNY academy product is one of 20 players called into a short training camp that will culminate in a match against Mexico's U-23 team on April 22.
Metzger's call-up suggests he did well during last month's U-23 excursion to Europe, when he made substitute appearances in the team's 5-2 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and a 1-0 loss to Denmark.
The U-23 squad's focus is on the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for the 2016 Olympics, schedule for October of this year.
Metzger will miss RBNY II's home game against Richmond Kickers - which will be played the same day as the U-23s' run-out against Mexico. He should be returned in time for the team's trip to Rochester on April 26.
Pushing a little further down the US national team age-groups, RBNY II looks to be celebrating at least one other call-up: academy player Marcello Borges (who is one of the players signed to the USL team on terms that do not affect his NCAA eligibility) has announced his invitation to the US U-18 MNT's April camp in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Blessed to have been called up to the US u18 mens national team. Can't wait to rep my country ⚽️ pic.twitter.com/yNla2QX9qc
