New York Red Bulls II will learn its U.S. Open Cup opponent tonight

The first round of the U.S. Open Cup is tonight. NYRB II plays in the second round. Thus its future opponent plays tonight.

John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

New York Greek American and Jersey Express face off tonight in the first round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Why is this important?

Because the winner of the match will face NYRB II in the second round.

New York Greek American play in the Cosmopolitan league, a semi-pro league affiliated with United States Adult Soccer Association, and were champions in 2013-14. The franchise has a long history in the U.S. Open Cup, winning the competition four times in 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1974. They will travel to the campus of the New Jersey Institute of Technology the home ground of the Jersey Express.

The Express play in the USL Premier Development League, the same as the New York Red Bulls U-23 team, and made the national PDL semi-finals in 2014. Current Red Bull on loan to New York City FC Ryan Meara played for the Jersey Express while he was in college.

If New York Greek American wins the match, NYRB II will host its inaugural match in U.S. Open Cup play in the second round. If the Jersey Express win, NYRB II will travel to Newark to face off against the PDL side.

The match kicks off at 8:00 pm Eastern Time and unfortunately will not have a live stream.

Who would you like to win tonight's match? Will NYRB II make it further than RBNY in the U.S. Open Cup?
