At 2:30 this afternoon, Fox Sports 1 shared the USMNT provisional roster for this summer's Gold Cup. On the roster, you will NOT see any current New York Red Bulls players. No Sacha Klejstan. No Dax McCarty. No Luis Robles. However, there are four players who have played for the Red Bulls in the past: Toronto FC's Jozy Altidore & Michael Bradley, New England Revolution's Juan Agudelo and most recently, Bolton Wanderer's Tim Ream.
As always when there is any team's roster release, there are a few surprises (snubs and additions). My surprises are that Klinsmann's prodigies, Gideon Zelalem and Julian Green, are not on the list. Also, MLS MVP contender, Benny Feilhaber is missing. On the surprises who actually made the roster, veteran DaMarcus Beasley (who announced his retirement from international play last year) and newcomer Alan Gordon are on the list.
Nineteen of the 35 announced players were on the US's 2014 World Cup squad, with some players, like Brad Evans, also appearing on their World Cup provisional roster. Some people thought that Klinsmann may use the Gold Cup as a way to get players on the U23 and U20 teams experience so they don't crash out of Olympic qualifying again, but that doesn't seem to be the case. There is a good blend of World Cup veterans with younger players who have already made senior team appearances.
The US will face Guatemala on July 3rd in Nashville, TN as their last tune-up before starting Gold Cup group play on July 7th against Honduras in Frisco, TX.
