The opening round of games of the Women's World Cup has occurred, and yesterday we had our first rest day. As the first round of second round of games kick off, lets review how our five Sky Blue players performed in the first round of games.
Round 1
Canada v. China
Jonelle Filigno the lone Sky Blue player on the Canadian roster started the game against China. Putting in a 61-minute shift, Filigno played up top in what appeared 4-3-3. FIFA's official website is declaring it a 4-4-2 but I digress. Filigno worked hard but was mostly ineffective. She had one shot off target and was most notably set up a sequence in the first half where the Chinese goalkeeper was forced to make a diving save and a blocked shot on an open goal.
United States v. Australia
Neither Christie Rampone nor Kelley O'Hara played in the United States' 3-1 victory over Australia. Both players did make the bench for the game.
For Australia both Samantha Kerr and Caitlin Foord started. The two players started on Australia's left flank. Both players, but more specifically Kerr, terrorized Krieger all night. If the two players continue to play like this and can bring this form to Sky Blue and the NWSL this season than Sky Blue might have found their offensive spark.
Mexico vs. Columbia
Monica Ocampo played 87 minutes in Mexico's 1-1 tie with Columbia. Ocampo was held scoreless in a game that featured two very good goals. Ocampo played on the left of Mexico's formation and was not able to get off any shots.or have a huge impact on the game.
