The U23 USMNT finished their group stage with six points, currently even with the Netherlands. However, the Dutch own the goal differential tie breaker, +3 to 0. The Netherlands will play France at 12:50PM EDT in their final group stage match to determine who will play for the championship and 3rd place games. France has clinched a spot in the next round as they have nine points though their three games played.
Additionally, keep an eye out for Costa Rica in the first game of the day versus Qatar. Costa Rica has only three points, but if they beat Qatar, they also will have six points. If they only win by one, the US and Costa Rica will also be tied 0-0 in goal differential. But Costa Rica would own the head-to-head tie breaker after defeating the US 2-1 on May 31st. If they win by more than one... the US can book their flights home. The 3rd place game will take place on June 7th at 10:50AM EDT.
The only way the US can advance to the 3rd place game is if the following happens:
- France beats Netherlands by 4+ goals AND Qatar does not lose to Costa Rica
Dan Metzger and company will just have to watch, wait and hope.
