The New York Red Bulls finished their regular season in style, clinching first place in the Mid Atlantic Division with a 10-0 win over the Westchester Flames on a rainy Saturday at the Red Bull Training Facility.
Mael Corboz (Red Bulls Academy/Maryland) opened the scoring with goals in the 8th and 19th minutes. Sean Sheridan (Red Bulls Academy/Villanova) added another in the 28th minute, followed shortly by an Alex Tejera (Red Bulls Academy/Siena) goal in the 30th minute. Brian White (PDA/Duke) scored in the 35th minute and Tejera scored his second to end the half with a 6-0 lead.
Westchester's night didn't get much better in the second half. Jared Stroud (PDA/Colgate) scored in the 54th and 60th minutes. Defender Joe Farrell (FC Delco/La Salle) got in on the fun in the 65th minute to make it 9-0. Chris Lema (Red Bulls Academy/Georgetown) closed out the match with a goal in the 81st minute.
Joe Ohaus (PDA/Duke) started at goalkeeper and got the shutout. He made zero saves.
10-0... wow. The Red Bulls had the edge on shots (25-0) and corners (9-0). Quite a way to enter the playoffs. But before we start talking about that, here are the final standings for the Mid Atlantic Division of the Premier Development League. The top three teams make the playoffs.
Having won the Mid Atlantic Division (arguably the best division in amateur soccer), the Baby Bulls advance directly to the semifinals of the Eastern Conference Championship. They play the winner of the Northeast Division Qualifier (GPS Portland Phoenix vs. Seacoast United Phantoms) on July 24th; the final is on July 25th. The host for the semifinals and final of the Eastern Conference Championship has yet to be determined, but all host bids have been submitted. Once a Metro has reached out to the New York Red Bulls asking if they put in a bid to host and will update if we receive a response.
The winner advances to the PDL Final Four which will be played at a site that has also yet to be determined.
The New York Red Bulls U23s won the National Premier Soccer League championship last season before switching over to the PDL this winter.
