On Wednesday, NYRB II beat up on Chelsea. Tonight, it was time for a split squad to do the job as the New York Red Bulls defeated visiting SL Benefica 2-1 in the 2015 International Champions Cup.
Benefica opened up scoring in the 7th minute when Pizzi put a low crossing shot past Luis Robles. The Red Bulls would answer back in the 33rd minute, with Bradley Wright-Phillips jumping on an errant back pass to make it 1-1, which is how the sides would enter the locker room at half time. Mike Grella would put the Red Bulls up for good early in the second half with a wonderful curving shot that found the upper corner.
The win makes the Red Bulls record 3-0-1 in the tournament for 10 points. They will finish the best MLS team in the North America edition as the LA Galaxy finished with 7 points (2-1-1) and the San Jose Earthquakes lost all 4 of their matches. It also means that for now, the Red Bulls are the champions, depending on what happens between Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain. If Manchester wins, they will be a perfect 4-0-0 and win the trophy. If PSG wins, they will need to make up a 2 goal difference to take the trophy. That match will take place on Wednesday, July 29th in Chicago, at 9 pm eastern.
