RBNY MLS Fantasy Recap Week 18: Abang, BWP, Miazga

The Fourth of July Curse continues

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

After a three-game winning streak, the New York Red Bulls followed it up with an overall flat performance against the Columbus Crew SC.  After scoring early, RBNY squandered the lead and let up two goals to drop a 2-1 decision.  The Crew used reverse psychology on the Red Bulls, registering 2 goals with their assists leader and 2 assists from their leading goal scorer.  The Red Bulls are 1-9-3 on July 4th, with their only win coming back in 2001.  Here are RB's top performers for the Crew match:

Anatole Abang, (FWD, 7 points): Abang started the Red Bulls off on the right foot (literally) with a slow-hit ball that just got by Steve Clark.  He had a decent game, able to get two of his three shots on frame.  Abang has given a bit of life to a Red Bulls team who has sputtered lately.

Bradley Wright-Phillips (FWD, 6 points): BWP is starting to find himself a new spot on the left wing.  He distributed a nicely slotted ball leading to Abang's goal, but couldn't find the frame most of the night from his five shots.

Matt Miazga (DEF, 5 points): The 19-year old is becoming one of the Red Bulls' better players this season.  This is only the second time this season they have lost with him in the lineup.  He added four defensive bonus points to his fantasy total and will be looked to as one of the leaders as a few other defensemen leave for the Gold Cup.

The Red Bulls will have to pick up the slack against a reeling New England Revolution on July 11th.  Only 6 points separate 2nd from 9th in the Eastern Conference.  A drew in their next game will put them in a tie for 2nd place.
