What to watch on match day 2 of the final round of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League group stage

From RBNY's perspective, this is the day that should pretty much confirm its quarterfinal opponent.

Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

The first match day of the final round of the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League group stage provided reason for Once A Metro to update its predicted quarterfinal pairings. The second match day should lock in the only pairing that really counts: the one involving the New York Red Bulls.

Today is the day that will decide if Portland Timbers have any further interest in this season's CCL, but it is the match playing out in Honduras between Olimpia and Pachuca that RBNY fans will want to keep an eye on.

Group C: Sporting Kansas City vs Central FC

8:00 pm, Eastern; @ Children's Mercy Park, Kansas City, USA

TV: nope

Both teams are already eliminated. The game probably doesn't even mean much to the players involved. Skip it.

Group B: Portland Timbers vs Saprissa

10:00 pm, Eastern; @ Providence Park, Portland, USA

Probably the most entertaining match of the night. The last time these teams met, they scored six goals between them. Portland needs a win; Saprissa needs to not lose, which will be easier if it can score a goal or two. The stage is set for an entertaining game.

From RBNY's perspective, however, there isn't much at stake in this match. One of these teams is going through to the quarterfinals as a higher seed than the Red Bulls (Portland will have more points it wins; Saprissa will have at least a better goal difference if it survives the trip to Oregon to qualify for the next round), but probably not high enough for either to be drawn against RBNY in the next round.

One to watch for entertainment value, but for RBNY fans, Olimpia and Pachuca is the more significant match.

Group E: Olimpia vs Pachuca

10:00 pm, Eastern; @ Estadio Tiburcio Carias Andino, Tegucigalpa, Honduras

How to watch (livesoccertv.com):

TV: nope

Online: CONCACAF Facebook page

The big match of the night from the New York Red Bulls' perspective, as it will be important in determining RBNY's quarterfinal opponent. If Pachuca wins, then Pachuca is the top seed for the quarterfinals, pushing Vancouver to second and Arabe Unido to third.

RBNY currently looks favorite for the seventh seed, so it's the second-ranked team it will be expecting to play in the quarterfinals (unless there are some surprising results on October 20).

If you like the look of Vancouver Whitecaps for RBNY in the next round, you're rooting for a Pachuca win. If you prefer Arabe Unido, then you're rooting for any result other than a Pachuca win.

Trips to Honduras can be tricky, and Olimpia only lost 1-0 to Los Tuzos in Mexico earlier in this group stage, so OaM is thinking draw and third seed for Pachuca.
