Two assists and the game-winning goal: Dax McCarty had a memorable night during the New York Red Bulls' 3-2 win over Philadelphia Union on October 1.
The RBNY club captain has already etched his name in the team's history: he is the Red Bulls' all-time record-holder for regular-season minutes played (14,201) and games started (161). And against Philly, he took another step toward the all-time, all-competitions RBNY appearance records that appear to be his destiny. He is now tied with Mike Petke for all-time, career starts (185), and getting close to the club records for games played (197; McCarty has 194) and minutes (16,561; McCarty has 16,425). Not long now - fitness and form permitting - before those records officially fall to Captain Dax.
In the meantime, however, he is still finding time for other achievements. McCarty plays mostly as a defensive midfielder for RBNY. He is not a regular scorer or even assist-maker. But he does make the occasional scoring contribution, and every once in a while he has game like the one against Philly, where is attacking work is what clinches the match for his team.
Fitting therefore that his big game against the Union should advance him to the cusp of a significant milestone for RBNY. His two assists were his 28th and 29th in all competitions for the Red Bulls. Only five players have ever tallied 30 or more assists in a career for RBNY (or the MetroStars).
McCarty now sits at sixth on the all-time, all-competitions assists list for the Red Bulls, just one short of 30.
