Christie Rampone named to 2016 NWSL Second XI

The National Women’s Soccer League announced the Best XI for the 2016 season on Friday, October 7.

The National Women’s Soccer League has announced the winners of the final two awards of the 2016 season, the Best XI and the Second XI.

Sky Blue FC defender Christie Rampone, who played 1,800 minutes, every minute this season, appears on the Second XI list. Rampone is also the only player from Sky Blue FC to make either list. The Second XI list is made up of the players who received the second most votes in the Best XI category.

This year, seven players earned their first selection into one of the Best XI lists by Lynn Williams, who was also voted NWSL MVP for 2016. Portland Thorns FC, winners of the NWSL Shield in 2016 find three players on the lists. Western New York Flash and Chicago Red Stars each have 2 players named to the selections.

Ashlyn Harris, goal keeper for the Orlando Pride, is the first player from an expansion club to earn a spot on one of the Best XI lists. This is also the second consecutive year seeing this list for four players, Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City), Lauren Barnes (Seattle Reign FC), Allie Long (Portland Thorns FC), and Christen Press (Chicago Red Stars).

The awards are voted on by four groups. First, coaches, owners, and general managers, second, the media, third, players, the first three groups vote to determine finalists. Then, those three groups vote again along with the fans to determine winners.
