Rumor: Bastia considering move for Ronald Zubar

If nothing else, the report from mercato365 serves to remind us that RBNY doesn't have the only say with regard to which players stay and which move on during the off-season.

Reporting for mercato365.com, Ignazio Genuardi writes that struggling Ligue 1 club Bastia is in the market for a defender, and has eyes on Lorient's Lindsay Rose.

Lorient is currently in even deeper trouble than Bastia: bottom of Ligue 1, and presumably somewhat envious of Bastia, who enjoy the relative comfort of 16th. But the Corsican club hasn't won a league game since September and just lost senior defender Sebastien Squillaci to a long-term injury - so there is room for improvement at Bastia also.

Rose has not been getting much time on the field for Lorient so far this season, so perhaps he will be allowed to move, but Genuardi advises the player's contract runs to 2020. Bastia reportedly wants "un joker medical" to bolster its squad, and the mercato365 report parenthetically suggests Ronald Zubar is also being considered.

Zubar recently offered a thank-you note to New York Red Bulls fans and colleagues, stating "it's time to rest and will see for the future".

Zubar is on the relatively short list of players with specific experience of Corsica and Ligue 1 relegation battles. Before moving to RBNY, played for (Corsican club) Ajaccio. The team was relegated from France's top flight in 2014, and Zubar was in New York by January 2015.

Whether the 31-year-old center back is minded to have another go at rescuing a Corsican club from relegation to Ligue 2 is, of course, a different question entirely.
