Bulls Abroad: Sacha Kljestan Tapped by USMNT for World Cup Qualifying

A bittersweet day for Sacha

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Red Bulls failed to advance to the next round in the MLS playoffs, after losing 3-1 on the aggregate to the Montreal Impact.  At halftime of the game, United States national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann took to Facebook Live to announce the roster for the upcoming World Cup "Hex" qualifiers against Mexico (11/11) and Costa Rica (11/15).  RBNY midfielder Sacha Kljestan was one of ten MLS players on the 26-man roster.

Kljestan was left off of the roster for two years, but made his return in the September qualifying games.  He recorded two goals and two assists in those matches.  He was also brought back for the two October friendlies.  He was a bit of a ghost in each of those games, not recording a point and only registering one shot.

During the Montreal match, Kljestan didn't have one of his best matches. His PK was saved in the 21st minute, he was elbowed in the face and went down with a bloody nose three minutes later and picked up a second half yellow card.  In regards to his nose, trainers were able to stop the bleeding after the Red Bulls played down a man for just over 10 minutes.  For his and the US's sake, let's hope his nose is not broken, as he had to play the rest of the game with gauze in both nostrils.

Kljestan currently has 50 caps for the US national team, tied for 49th on the US men's list.  He is one cap behind Brad Guzan and two behind Fabian Johnson.  Unfortunate evening for the team, but congrats to Sacha on the call-up.  Let's bring the ruckus in Columbus on Friday night.
