After the departure of Matt Miazga to Chelsea, Ghanaian defender Gideon Baah is now the latest rumored target for New York's backline.
The 24 year old centerback plays for Finnish club HJK and has for the past three seasons. Due to the club's regular top 3 finishes, it has allowed Baah to feature in UEFA Champions League and Europa league matches. In addition he received his first international call up for Ghana in 2015. As part of his call up Baah played alongside current RBNY winger Lloyd Sam in a friendly against Canada.
In terms of positioning, Baah primarily features as a center back but does have experience playing on the left. He would add much needed depth for the Red Bulls with center backs Ronald Zubar and Damien Perinelle currently injured. Baah's versatility will come in handy when defenders Karl Ouimette and Kemar Lawrence feature on the Canadian and Jamaican national team respectively, unless Baah himself is called up for Ghana.
Gideon Baah has excellent dribbling and agility. His control of the ball is akin to midfielders, and is no stranger to skill moves. Baah is keen on dribbling up the pitch and helping his team offensively, a trait not many centerbacks possess. In the Red Bulls' high press system, a centerback that can help join the rush in midfield and maintain possession is a valuable asset. Baah has exceptional finishing as well, deeming very useful on set pieces, another plus for a team that is known to draw fouls in dangerous areas of the pitch.
Baah's young age and skillset is reminiscent of Kemar Lawrence, a key signing for the club last year. If the reports are true, Baah should fit right in as a starter for the club and make an immediate impact within their system.
