It was a fun filled evening in the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup as some of the clubs within the region got a chance to go out on the field and strut their stuff to advance to the Third Round of the 2016 Edition. Even though at this moment the NY Pancyprian Freedoms of Queens will face the Jersey Express of Newark this evening, it should be fun to see who the Red Bulls will get in their draw.
And after the dust settled we have two sides ready to face in each other in Round 3 Proper as the Rochester Rhinos of the USL will face Lansdowne Bhoys FC from the Cosmopolitan League and this match will determine if the Red Bulls travel to Western New York, or host the club from Yonkers.
As we all know the Rochester Rhinos are a former US Open Cup Champion who defeated the Colorado Rapids in the 1999 finals at Columbus Crew Stadium, when the final at the time was at a neutral site. The club who won the USL Championship last year dispatched Amateur side Southie FC from Boston in a seven goals to nil victory.
Asani Samuels recorded a Hat Trick to put his club into the next round and will now host a local amateur side that makes it's home just over the border of Westchester County along McLean Ave. that separates the Bronx and Yonkers in Lansdowne Bhoys FC. The Amateur side has traveled to South Huntington, Long Island to defeat the Long Island Rough Riders in extra time in Round 1.
Then the club traveled to Western Pennsylvania to face the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and dispatched the ten men side with a two goals to nil victory to punch their tickets for travel to Western New York. The man sending his Bhoys to battle is Austin Friel who came over from Ireland and has his side primed for a possible second straight upset if his side has the luck of the Irish.
But for the New York Red Bulls they have faced the Rhinos before in Western, NY back in 2005 in a 3-1 loss, but if they do face Lansdowne Bhoys this will be the first time they will take on a side that is below the levels of the PDL & NPSL. So while everyone is excited for June 1st to roll in to watch these two sides the winner will take on the MLS club on June 15th when the Copa America Centenario takes a break.
Get to your computers folks and let's see which club will be the Red Bulls Opponents for the fourth round proper in the 2016 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.
