The New York Red Bulls absolutely destroyed New York City FC on Saturday afternoon. The team scored early and often, with Dax McCarty starting the scoring in the third minute. In the process the team set a few records.
First, the 7-0 scoreline tied the largest victory in an away performance in MLS history. Only two other times in MLS history has a road team won by 7 goals. The first was the LA Galaxy winning 8-1 over FC Dallas in 1998, with the second being Chicago Fire winning 7-0 over Sporting Kansas City in 2001.
The Red Bulls also are now the first team in MLS history to have all three substitutes score in the same game. Coincidentally, they also happened to score in the order they came onto the field. Alex Muyl came on for Mike Grella in the 54th minute and scored less than 2 minutes later. Gonzalo Veron came on for Bradley Wright-Phillips in the 66th minute and scored in the 83rd. Gideon Baah came on for Sacha Kljestan in the 80th minute and capped off the Red Bulls scoring in the 89th minute.
The Red Bulls also set a new team record for biggest victory. The previous record was a 6 goal victory (6-0) over Real Salt Lake on August 26, 2006. After the 7-0 victory, the Red Bulls have now won 53 games in their history by 3 or more goals.
