New York Red Bulls U-16s in RB Salzburg's Next Generation Trophy

Red Bull soccer's annual academy showcase kicks off on August 11.

The New York Red Bulls U-16s have been announced as participants in RB Salzburg's Next Generation Trophy, a youth tournament never described as the RalfBall Cup.

The tournament is Papa Red Bull's academy showpiece, with representative teams from all four members of the RB Global Soccer family present. Always a youth competition, the Next Generation Trophy hasn't always been a U-16s showcase. In 2014, RBNY's U-14s finished third, still the best finish at the tournament for the New York side of RB soccer.

RBNY has been ever-present in the competition since 2011. Current New York Red Bull Tyler Adams was part of that 3rd-placed team in 2014. The tournament has also been graced by Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata and Mateo Kovacic (when he was in Dinamo Zagreb's youth system).

Held at the Liefering Academy, the tournament is traditionally staged on RB Salzburg's turf. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, Salzburg is the most successful team in the competition's history: three times the winner, including the last two editions. No other team has won the trophy twice. And of the non-Salzburg winning clubs, only Werder Bremen is present this year.

The Austrian club is keen to point out that its current first team includes at least two players who have contested the Next Generation Trophy: Konrad Laimer and Valentino Lazaro.

The tournament will run from August 11 to 13. The 12 teams entered are divided into four groups of three. RBNY drew Benfica and FC Midtjylland (the club from whence new signing Daniel Royer came).
