The promise of returning women's national team members from Rio and major playoff implications for Sky Blue FC brought large crowds and a party atmosphere to Yurcack Field at Rutgers University campus in Piscataway, New Jersey on Saturday night.
Although Sky Blue FC ultimately fell to the Chicago Red Stars, who took the lead in the first half off of a Stephanie McCaffrey goal, neither team failed to fight till the very last second.
While Caroline Stanley was easily able to collect or deflect several goal attempts by the Red Stars, goals by McCaffrey, Christen Press and Sofia Huerta seemed to seal the match for Chicago.
But Sky Blue FC still put on a valiant effort including a goal attempts by Samantha Kerr, Erica Skroski, Leah Galton and Tasha Kai.
A successful shot to the net by Sam Kerr was denied when Sarah Killion was called off-sides. Kerr did finally put Sky Blue FC on the board with a second ball into the net shortly after the 92nd minute of play. Moments later the whistle sounded, securing a solid 3-1 win for the Chicago Red Stars against Sky Blue FC.
Sky Blue FC will next travel to Swope Soccer Village to take on FC Kansas City on Sunday, September 4.
