During the second 2016 Olympics Group F game, the Australia Women's National Team (AUSWNT) pulled out all the stops to get a 2-2 draw and one point against Germany.
Sam Kerr made the first goal off the foot of Caitlin Foord, in the sixth minute of play, marking the first goal that the Matildas have seen in this Olympic Games. In the 45th minute Caitlin Foord hit the back of the net after a strong pass from Lisa de Vanna.
Germany scored their first goal of the match in first half stoppage time from Sara Däbritz. Their second goal came from Saskia Bartusiak in the 88th minute. This match, Germany seemed to be overly confident in themselves, facing off against one of the underdogs in the games, and they likely were not expecting the intensity that Australia brought today.
In the end, Australia did not get the result they wanted, but his match turned out much better for them than their first one, especially considering how Germany beat Zimbabwe by five points. Australia was the better team for most of the match, but against an opponent like Germany, a tie is essentially the equivalent of a win.
Australia will next play Zimbabwe and Germany will take on Canada in their final matches of group play on Tuesday, August 9.
