We do not yet know if the New York Red Bulls first team will win a trophy this season. US Open Cup is not an option. The Supporters' Shield was a long shot before FC Dallas picked up another three points this weekend, so it is still a long shot. MLS Cup qualification must be achieved before we really start to speculate about the team's chances in that competition. And CONCACAF Champions League isn't handing out any silverware this season.
But New York Red Bulls II already know there will be USL Cup matches to play when its regular season is over. And the team has a very good shot at clinching the USL regular season title. Such a good shot, in fact, the title could be clinched as early as this Wednesday.
After beating Bethlehem Steel on Sunday, September 4, NYRB II moved up to 59 points for the season. The only team mathematically capable of reaching that total is Louisville City FC, which is also therefore NYRB II's only rival for the Eastern Conference title.
LCFC has 53 points and three games left to play, which means its maximum points total for the season is 62. NYRB II can get to 62 points with its next win - and if it does win another game in USL, it will clinch the regular season title.
That is because the first tiebreaker in USL is total wins.
NYRB II has 18 wins right now; LCFC has 15 wins. If NYRB II wins one more match, it will have 62 points and 19 wins. The best LCFC can get to is 62 points and 18 wins.
So if you want to see the New York Red Bulls win a trophy this season, and you don't want to wait to see how the playoffs shake out or bank on FCD falling on its face in MLS, go see NYRB II.
Specifcally, go see them on Wednesday, September 7, when they play Harrisburg City Islanders at Millersville University. Kick off is at 4:00 pm.
