U.S. Soccer has officially confirmed the dates, times and locations for the second year of the SheBelieves Cup.
The tournament will feature the same four top teams as last year’s tournament, with the U.S., France, England, and Germany all returning.
In 2016, the U.S. won the SheBelieves Cup after thrilling 1-0 victories over both England and France. They capped off the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Germany in the SheBelieves Cup finale. The U.S. will face their toughest competition since their stunning early exit from the Olympics last year.
With the Olympics gone but not forgotten, this tournament is an important evaluation tool for the U.S. moving into the new cycle. It serves as an opportunity for players both old and new to prove themselves against high caliber teams.
In a statement released by U.S. Soccer, U.S. Head Coach Jill Ellis explains why this tournament is so important for player development and evaluation.
“It’s fantastic to play these three teams in the first three games of the year,” Ellis said. “As I’ve said many times, one of our main goals is to play the best teams in the world as often as possible and we have tremendous respect for France, Germany and England, which all feature world class players at multiple positions. To hold this tournament at home is great for our fans and TV partners, but especially for our players and our coaching staff as these are the kinds of games where we get tested and can really learn a lot about ourselves.”
The SheBelieves Cup features the same format as last year’s tournament. The teams will play three doubleheaders between March 1-7. The tournament will follow a traditional point system, with each team receiving three points for a win, one for a tie and none for a loss. The winner will be determined based on points accumulated.
The teams will take the pitch in the northeastern locations of Chester, Pennsylvania; Harrison, New Jersey; and Washington, D.C. This year’s SheBelieves Cup features closer match locations than last year, better serving fans who want to attend multiple games.
