Sam Kerr was awarded the Professional Footballers Australia (PFA) Player of the Month for the Westfield W-League, the professional women’s soccer league in Australia, for December. This award is voted on by all of the players in the league.
Kerr, who is captaining the second-place Perth Glory team, scored five times during the team’s four games last month. The team was able to win every one of their four matches that month.
Her performance is reminiscent of that in the second half of the 2016 NWSL season in which she scored goals in four consecutive matches, earning her the NWSL Player of the Month honor in September.
Upon receiving the W-League award, Kerr was grateful for the win and commended her teammates for their efforts.
Kerr told the PFA, “It’s nice to be voted by the players as the winner, but I accept it on behalf of all my teammates who have been fantastic and have ensured we have had a great month.”
She went on to say, “Having missed a lot of last season through injury, it is great to be back playing and winning games. It is very tight the race for the Championship, and I see no reason why we can’t go all the way this season.’’
Not only was Kerr scoring goals in the month of December, but she has been scoring all season for Perth Glory. She currently has scored the most goals in the W-League, netting nine goals in just nine games.
With only four weeks remaining in the regular season, Perth Glory has already secured a spot in the post season. Perth missed out on making the post season last year but have returned to winning form and are currently riding a six-game unbeaten streak.
Sam Kerr, fellow Sky Blue FC/Perth Glory teammate Nikki Stanton and the rest of the team are back in action on Saturday at midnight EST, where they face third place Canberra United. To follow along with the all of Perth’s games, you can follow @PerthGloryWomen on Twitter.
