New York Red Bulls' preseason friendly with University of Arizona is postponed

RBNY's preseason plans have been altered.

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Announced by the University of Arizona men's soccer team  and confirmed by the New York Red Bulls: the preseason friendly between the two teams has been postponed.

The match had been scheduled at U of A's request: RBNY head coach Jesse Marsch has said the local club soccer team had reached out to his team, and the Red Bulls accepted in keeping with their current interest in boosting the number of on-field minutes they can find for their players currently in preseason training camp.

It is perhaps ironic that the friendly the Red Bulls agreed to play to raise fitness levels within its squad has now been postponed due to concerns about fitness. Nonetheless, RBNY has confirmed the desire to see the game played remains on both sides. A suitable alternative date for the match is currently being sought.

The game was originally scheduled to be played on January 31, creating a sort of double-header for RBNY, also scheduled to play Real Salt Lake on the same day. Now the Red Bulls will have to fit U of A into their remaining time in Arizona (they are due to leave on February 4), or on their return to the state (RBNY will be back for a second preseason camp on February 11).
