From trading Dax McCarty to losing the Hudson River Derby to making the US Open Cup Final for the first time in a decade, 2017 was full of shocks and surprises for the Red Bulls. But perhaps none of those events match the level of surprise that Red Bulls fans felt as the team finished off 2017 with arguably their biggest shocker of the year: The 2018 kit reveal to be held on New Year’s Day 2018 - and it may be exactly the kind of kit fans have wanted for years.
On Friday the Red Bulls released a video with the caption “You Said We'd Never Do It. Coming Soon...01.01.18.” In the final 10 seconds of the video, as the background crowd chants “New York Is Red,” the video reads: New Kit Unveil, Coming 01.01.2018
Given that the Red Bulls new kit release for a given season has typically occurred between February and March, the early announcement - with no leaks to be found on any kit-monitoring outlet - came as a huge surprise.
Ever since the Red Bull takeover in 2006, fans have wanted a red kit in honor of the historic MetroStars colors. However, despite having the word “Red” in their name, the team has only ever released home shirts with red stripes that were primarily of another color like white or black; whereas the away kit would almost always be some combination of blue and yellow - the team’s secondary colors.
But if the implied caption and teaser are anything to go by, it seems that the kit the fans have always wanted is merely hours away.

Now, if the team REALLY wants to get fans pumped for 2018, then they could perhaps announce a brand new signing or a big-impact trade on the same day.
