Having lost to Costa Rica in its opening game of the Classification Stage, Panama needs to beat Mexico to retain any realistic hope of qualifying from this CONCACAF Men's U-17 Championship for the 2017 U-17 World Cup. A tie would at least keep Los Canaleros' hopes alive in the tournament, but they would be very slender hopes - and even a win doesn't guarantee Panama a place at the World Cup.
So expect Los Canaleros, playing in front of a home crowd, to be well motivated. Unfortunately, Mexico can be expected to be up for this game too. This El Tri U-17 team is in danger of surrendering Mexico's extraordinary record in this tournament: it has won the last three CONCACAF U-17 Championships it has contested that crowned a stand-alone winner (for reasons peculiar to CONCACAF, those were the 2015, 2013 and 1996 editions of the tournament).
Count Mexico as the favorite to win this game, but perhaps don't underestimate the boost Panama will get from home advantage and the simple desire not to leave this competition on a sour note.
