Fans of the United States men's national soccer team living in the NYC metro area have longed for a chance to see the team play in meaningful games without having to travel all the way to MetLife Stadium or Lincoln Financial Field. Well this Fall they just might get the chance with the USMNT poised to play its final World Cup Qualifying match at Red Bull Arena.
According to a report from SI.com, Red Bull Arena is set to be the venue for the match between the USMNT and Costa Rica - the Yanks' final home match of the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying Hex. The game is scheduled for September 1.
While Red Bull Arena has hosted a variety of CONCACAF tournament games, it has never hosted a World Cup Qualifying Match for either the USMNT or the USWNT.
The USMNT is currently fourth in the Hex table with four points, but needs to finish at least third to guarantee a spot at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. A fourth-place finish will send them to a playoff match with the fifth-place team from the AFC (Asian Football Confederation).
Costa Rica is one of the better teams in CONCACAF, and already asserted its dominance over the USMNT earlier in the Hex with a 4-0 drubbing in Matchday 2.
The US and Costa Rica previously faced off in an international friendly at Red Bull Arena back in October 2015, with Costa Rica leaving victorious in a 1-0 win.
