The 2017 PDL season starts May 5, but the New York Red Bulls U-23s won't begin their campaign until May 20. Such is the nature of PDL: some teams are ready to go, others are still getting themselves together. The RBNY U-23s are certainly in the latter category.
Still, the Red Bulls have started to assemble a roster, and two players from what looks a lot like a partial list of RBNY U-23s for 2017 have made it on to a 50-man watch-list issued by PDL to mark the start of its new season. Those players are midfielder Brian White and goalkeeper Benjamin Lundgaard.
White is an attacking midfielder who has played three seasons at Duke. In 2016, he had five goals and four assists in 17 games for his college team, and was named to the ACC Men's Soccer All-Conference second team (current Red Bull Zeiko Lewis was an ACC All-Conference first-teamer in 2016). White was part of the RBNY U-23s squad that reached the 2015 PDL Championship game. He scored in that final, but the Red Bulls lost, 4-3, to K-W United.
Goalkeeper Lundgaard plays his college soccer for Virginia Tech. Everybody Soccer ranked him the number three 'keeper amongst NCAA Juniors heading into the 2016 college season, and he had risen to second on the list by the end of the season.
RBNY U-23s open their 2017 PDL campaign against Reading United on May 20.
