Historically, the New York Red Bulls don't do well against New England away from home: the team has won five of 38 away-days against the Revs.
In 2017, RBNY will get at least two shots at improving on that record: this July 5 trip to play the Revs in MLS, followed by the July 13 US Open Cup quarterfinal that New England will be hosting. The sides might see each other again in the post-season, though with both currently struggling in league play, it is optimistic to suggest the Eastern Conference playoffs will feature the Red Bulls and the Revs.
Neither team will be at full strength for this match-up, both squads having donated players to the 2017 Gold Cup - which kicks off on July 7 - and each having its share of injury issues. Also, suspension will keep RBNY's Tyler Adams out of this game for RBNY.
The two misfiring teams will perhaps be glad to catch each other at a low ebb as they scrap for points, but one suspects they will both also be looking ahead to USOC. A trip to the semifinals of that competition would be a boost to either side's season, and a win in the next game between these teams will be better-remembered than this mid-season league encounter.
