Honduras is technically the top seed in Group A of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup, thanks to fact that it won the 2017 Copa Centroamericana. Costa Rica, however, might reasonably point out that form in World Cup qualifying suggests it will be heading to Russia 2018 and Los Catrachos will not.
Both these teams are expected to make it out of this group. With Costa Rica seemingly on a comfortable path to qualify for the new World Cup, however, it is Honduras that could use a boost of morale and momentum from this tournament. And that boost won't come from beating Canada or French Guiana later in the group stage. Los Catrachos look to be in decline at the moment, but they can gather hope for a turnaround in form in World Cup qualifying with strong performances against the better teams in the region at this tournament - and the first opportunity to deliver such a performance comes in their opening game.
