Sky Blue FC (9-10-2, 29 points) returns to National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) action on Sunday as the New Jersey club hosts the Washington Spirit (4-13-4, 16 points) at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, New Jersey. The match is set to kickoff at 6 p.m. ET, and fans can watch the match on go90.com, the go90 app or on NWSLsoccer.com.
History could be made on Sunday evening as Sky Blue FC’s Sam Kerr eyes the NWSL single-season scoring record. Kerr scored her 16th goal of the season on August 26 in the club’s 1-0 win over Boston, tying former Seattle Reign FC midfielder Kim Little for the record she set back in 2014. In Sky Blue FC’s last outing, the club lost 4-1 to FC Kansas City, and Kerr was kept off the score sheet.
The Australia international has taken the league by storm this season and is the current front-runner for the NWSL Golden Boot, as well as a potential MVP candidate. She has already broken multiple league records this season, with the most recent being a four-goal performance to lift her team to a 5-4 win against Seattle and keeping Sky Blue FC’s playoff hopes alive.
With the postseason in mind, Sky Blue FC will need a victory on Sunday to remain (somewhat) comfortably in the running for the fourth and final 2017 playoff spot. This weekend will mark the third and final meeting between these two clubs with the Spirit earning victories in the two previous contests.
The first match-up occurred in April at the Maryland SoccerPlex, and Washington walked away with a 4-3 win. The last encounter took place on August 4 at Yurcak Field, and going into halftime, the home team had a 1-0 advantage. However, the Spirit rallied to score four unanswered goals to claim a 4-1 result.
Historically, Sky Blue FC leads the head-to-head series with a 7-6-2 overall record and holds a 4-3-0 edge at Yurcak Field.
