Sky Blue FC forward Sam Kerr was named to the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) Team of the Month for August after scoring five goals in three appearances. This marks the fourth consecutive month that Kerr has earned NWSL Team of the Month honors.
The Australia international continued to break records during the month of August, starting with becoming the first player in NWSL history to score four goals in a single match in addition to being the first player to score multiple hat tricks in a season. This historic event occurred on August 19 when Sky Blue FC hosted Seattle at Yurcak Field.
After trailing 3-0 at halftime, Kerr exploded for four goals in the second half to lead the New Jersey squad to an improbable 5-4 comeback win. Kerr scored in the 48th, 68th and 71st minutes of action before sending home the game-winner in the 94th minute. On the play, Taylor Lytle struck her corner kick towards the middle of the six where Kerr fought off multiple defenders to head the ball into the back of the net for a virtual buzzer-beater.
The comeback victory made Sky Blue FC the first team in NWSL history to win a match after facing a three-goal deficit. The New Jersey club also became the first team to win a game after trailing at the 90-minute mark.
In addition to the match-up against Seattle Reign FC, Kerr broke more records by extending the Sky Blue FC franchise mark for most career goals (27), as well as tying the all-time league record of 16 goals in a single season (Kim Little – 2014). Kerr also increased her NWSL career goals record to 42 and counting.
Kerr has three games remaining this season to score an NWSL record 17th goal. Her next opportunity will be on Sunday when Sky Blue FC returns home to New Jersey to host the Washington Spirit for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff at Yurcak Field in Piscataway.
The NWSL Team of the Month is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
